    Consumption: Beyond Certainty Equivalence

    Get PDF
    This paper discusses the recent research on the consumption function that has attempted to relax the assumption of certainty equivalence. While there remain many open questions, both theoretical and empirical, it is clear that the assumption of certainty equivalence can be misleading. Under more plausible specifications of preferences toward risk, uncertainty lowers the level of consumption, increases the expected rate of growth of consumption, and increases the response of consumption to news about income. Moreover, changes in the amount of uncertainty are a potentially important source of fluctuations in consumption.

    A Vector Supersymmetry Killing the Infrared Singularity of Gauge Theories in Noncommutative Space

    Full text link
    We show that the "topological BF-type" term introduced by Slavnov in order to cure the infrared divergences of gauge theories in noncommutative space can be characterized as the consequence of a new symmetry. This symmetry is a supersymmetry, generated by vector charges, of the same type as the one encountered in Chern-Simons or BF topological theories.Comment: 9 pages, LaTex. Work presented by O. On the volatile enrichments and composition of Jupiter

    Full text link
    Using the clathrate hydrates trapping theory, we discuss the enrichments in volatiles in the atmosphere of Jupiter measured by the \textit{Galileo} probe in the framework of new extended core-accretion planet formation models including migration and disk evolution. We construct a self-consistent model in which the volatile content of planetesimals accreted during the formation of Jupiter is calculated from the thermodynamical evolution of the disk. Assuming CO2:CO:CH4 = 30:10:1 (ratios compatible with ISM measurements), we show that we can explain the enrichments in volatiles in a way compatible with the recent constraints set from internal structure modeling on the total amount of heavy elements present in the planet.Comment: Accepted in ApJLetter

    Back to normal? The future of global production networks.

    It is neither likely nor desirable for central banks to exit from unconventional monetary policies in the near future. However, it is important that central banks develop an exit strategy, evaluate the merits of new and old monetary policy tools and communicate with the public so as to maintain financial stability, support economic growth and minimize future inflationary risks. Central bank communication policy will turn out to be crucial and more challenging than it was before the crisis.Wertschöpfung; Outsourcing; Business Network; Offshoring; Globalisierung; Wirtschaftskrise;

    Run Up of Surface and Internal Waves

    Full text link
    The evolution of breaking waves propagating towards the shore and more specifically the run-up phase over the swash-zone for surface as well as for internal waves is considered. The study is based on a) laboratory run up experiments for surface waves ; b) laboratory stratified flow experiments and c) on field data describing the internal wave run up. The presentation is focused on the breaking and energy transfer mechanisms common to surface and internal waves in the swash-zone. The mathematical model taking into account turbulent mixing and dispersion effects is discussed

    Self-propulsion of pure water droplets by spontaneous Marangoni stress driven motion

    Full text link
    We report spontaneous motion in a fully bio-compatible system consisting of pure water droplets in an oil-surfactant medium of squalane and monoolein. Water from the droplet is solubilized by the reverse micellar solution, creating a concentration gradient of swollen reverse micelles around each droplet. The strong advection and weak diffusion conditions allow for the first experimental realization of spontaneous motion in a system of isotropic particles at sufficiently large P\'eclet number according to a straightforward generalization of a recently proposed mechanism. Experiments with a highly concentrated solution of salt instead of water, and tetradecane instead of squalane, confirm the above mechanism. The present swimming droplets are able to carry external bodies such as large colloids, salt crystals, and even cells.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    It is generally accepted that the two major delictual actions derived from Roman law (the actio legis Aquiliae for patrimonial loss and the actio iniuriarum for sentimental damages in cases of libel) do not provide for the recovery of immaterial damages flowing from injury to the human body. This action for pain and suffering which forms part and panel of modem South African law has its roots in other legal systems. This article aims to trace its moral philosphical origins with reference to the views of Thomas of Aquino, authors of manuals used during confession and the sixteenth-century Spanish philosophers, as well as their influence on the important Roman-Dutch author, Hugo de Groot. In this context the role of restitution as instance ofiustitia commulativa is pivotal
